From First Sit to Fabulous Focus: Why Training Matters at Every Stage
Bringing a new puppy into your home is an exciting time, filled with joy and lots of cuddles. It’s also the perfect time to start their training journey. Puppy preschool is more than just a fun playdate; it lays the foundation for a well-behaved, confident adult dog.
Starting Early: The Benefits
Training your dog from an early age helps build a strong bond between you and your pup. It sets the stage for positive behaviours and helps address any challenges before they become habits.
Early training also introduces your pup to new experiences, making them more adaptable and less fearful of the world around them.
The Teenage Months: A Critical Period
Between 6 months and 2 years, dogs go through a phase referred to as "Adolescence". During this time, they might test boundaries and display behaviours that can be challenging. It’s no surprise that many dogs are rehomed during this stage of their life. Continuing training during these months is crucial to help your dog navigate this phase successfully.
Why Ongoing Training Matters
Training doesn’t stop once your dog reaches adulthood. Ongoing training strengthens your bond, keeps their mind active, and helps maintain good behaviour throughout their life. It’s about setting your dog up for a lifetime of happiness and harmony with you.
Quick Tip: One of the simplest things you can do right now is to: Mark "Yes" and reward your dog (with a tasty treat) any time they choose to walk beside you.
You don’t need to ask for it, just capture those moments where they check in, offer eye contact, or walk near your leg, and mark and reward (on or off leash).
This helps reinforce calm, connected walking without needing to nag, use the leash or repetitively cue for position.
